In this short video I am demonstrating how very important it is to use the proper wire when placing fixed retainers on your patients. It is ABSOLUTELY necessary to use a very – very soft, passive wire. A wire which delivers no force on the orthodontically treated teeth. The retainer wire must have PLASTICITY, NOT ELASTICITY. If an elastic wire is used, then it will be delivering low-but-constant forces on the teeth that are meant to be retained. This will eventually move the teerth and the alignment will be lost. Furthermore, if the wire delivers forces for a long time, undesired dental movents will occur. I have seen this happen many times in patients from other dental practices who came to my office for advice. I documented a few of them, Here are three such cases. The message is: Do NOT rely solely on the fixed retainers. The fixed retainers should be used in combination with the removable retainers and they should also be checked, either by the orthodontist, or by the family dentist, or even by the patient herself/himself.
